Traders tourney champs score trophies on awards night

Members of the Dynamites received their championship trophies after beating team Black Hawks 20-9 in the finals round.

“We ended strong because of our players in the singles rounds,” said Dynamite’s team captain Dick Guintu.

His team received the home advantage in the championship match, where Class B players So Young Lee and Toshiko Obata dominated Hawks’ Merlie Savellano and Christy Villaflor. Earning another three sets for their team was Kanata Omori. Joining them were Elma Labuson, Marlene Peraja, Joey Aljeno, Rommel Monserat, Efren Cacdac, and Jerry Hibi.

“We also scored a lot from the Orange Shuttlers during the semifinals. Because we were the home team, we got to choose the strongest players from our team. We got 20 sets compared to the Hawks’ 18,” added Guintu.

The Hawks had the upper hand in the tournament’s first three weeks until they were pushed to second place before the semis. Beating them with 116 sets were the Dynamites, who fought back in the week four. The Dynamites scored 20-9 against the Orange Shuttlers during the semifinals, while the Hawks crushed team Yellow Idols 18-10.

The Idols later won second runner-up with a 21-8 win against the Shuttlers.

The Hawks were comprised of Annette Quiambao, Merlie Savellano, Cristy Villaflor, Angie Ito, Rick Brien, Oh Imbog, Alvin Alvarez, Edwin Maratas, Edwin Montoya and Rey Bulaon.

The Idols included Heo In Souk, Emily Vargas, Lucelle Lampera, Malou Malasarte, Charlie Borja, Manatsu Omori, Cris Hilario, Aries Cordero, Saul Gargallo, and Hapi Gabriel.

Claiming this year’s sportsmanship awards were Shuttler’s Roger Vales and Obata. In addition to the champions, trophies were also given to the Hawks and Idols. Other teams that competed were teams Royale Blue, Green Bucks, and Red Hot Chili Shuttlers.
