CUC fails to meet deadline, but says will hire deputy director this week

CUC human resources manager Frankie Cepeda said they expect to make an offer of employment to one of the candidates this week.

Based on the applicants’ feedback, Cepeda said the candidates “liked” the island environment and the working situation at CUC.

Under the federal stipulated orders, CUC and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will notify  each other and the U.S. District Court for the NMI if either party anticipates it will not be able to meet any deadline.

CUC informed the court that the utilities agency could not meet the Nov. 12 deadline because CUC had to wait for the official appointment of the executive director before proceeding with the hiring of the other  positions required by the stipulated orders.

CUC Executive Director Utu Abe  Malae was appointed on Oct. 29, 2010

The post of the deputy executive director for drinking water is among the eight positions required by EPA.

The seven other positions have already been filled, and the new appointees include chief finance officer Charles Warren, technical manager for oil William Sword and Malae.

David Preston will assume the drinking water and wastewater division manager’s position  in December while Richard Wasser will be the wastewater treatment plant operations supervisor in January.

The positions for chief engineer and water and wastewater associate engineer have already been filled by Capt. Robert Lorenz and  Cmdr. Kenneth Esplin.
