House asks Fitial to pay staff who worked during shutdown

Lawmakers are seeking back pay for these employees.

The list included 17 staffers, one from each lawmaker involved in the enactment of the budget bill, H.B. 17-123, which Fitial signed into law on Sunday.

Rep. Eliceo D. Cabrera, R-Saipan, made the list.

He said he believes those who reported for work during the budget deliberations should have been considered “essential.”

The list was signed by Speaker Froilan C. Tenorio, Covenant-Saipan.

But the governor’s special assistant to the administration, Esther Fleming, said the administration is not likely to approve the House request.

There will be no retroactive pay for the legislative staffers even if they reported for work during the shutdown, she added.

She said the governor’s list of essential personnel did not include legislative staffers.

Fleming  said their not getting paid is the consequence of the Legislature’s failure to pass a balanced budget before Oct. 1.
