Yap notes low turnout for public education on proposed amendments

On the 2nd and 3rd of October, the first public education meetings were held in various communities and municipalities around the island. Six teams were sent out to various venues to conduct public education on the proposed constitutional amendments for the Yap state and the FSM national constitutions.

The various teams reported low attendances in their municipality meetings, with some areas reporting in no attendance while a few reported attendance numbers close to 15. Okaw community had a good turnout of over 50 participants. The OI community meetings also reported exceptional attendance numbers as high as 60.

Public education meetings will be conducted again during the weekend of Oct. 16-17 at the same sites and times by the same teams.

In an effort to promote public awareness, the Department of Youth and Civic Affairs has increased public announcements over the AM and FM radio stations. Support of the Council of Pilung will again be sought. The official Yap state government website www.yapstategov.org has all the relevant documents on its homepage.

It is recommended that the people of Yap attend these public education meetings.
