Palau Team gears up for Biodiversity conference in Japan

Next week’s COP10 conference of 193 nations id expected to conclude with an international agreement on access and benefit-sharing of genetic resources, as well as a strategic plan for conserving certain percentages of the Earth’s land and sea areas for biodiversity preservation.

Senior ministers and heads of state will be present for the conference. At the Palau side, the delegation will be headed by Environment and Tourism Minister Harry Fritz.

Bilung Gloria Salii will be making a presentation on importance of pelagic and migratory marine species to the people of Palau and the Pacific Communities.

The other delegates to the conference from Palau will be part of the negotiations such as marine and coastal biodiversity negotiations, protected areas negotiations, sustainable use of biodiversity and climate change.

Fabian Iyar, CEO of Palau International Coral Reef Center will be making a presentation on the experiences and best policies in Communication and Education and Public awareness.

The 193 signatory nations to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) pledged eight years ago to cut species loss “significantly” by this year.

The meeting of CBD nations on 18–29 October will give the green light to a new set of international agreements to help protect biodiversity. These include 20 new ambitions to be met by 2020, such as halving the loss and degradation of forests and other natural habitats.

The Protected Areas Network (PAN) National Coordinator, Joe Aitaro will also be part of the Palau group.

Palau Conservation Society Executive Director Elbuchel Sadang will also be attending and he stated that PCS will also be participating on behalf of Birdlife International.
