Special Ed Program lacks teachers

Sengebau said since last school year, the Special Ed Program has been short of teachers. And current teachers are stressed out because of this.

“It’s not easy finding Special Education teachers,” Sengebau said. “It’s a personal decision. Most people are interested in other works, other fields.”

Right now, the Special Ed Program needs five additional teachers to handle the classes. Four will be assigned in Koror and one in other nearby State.

“We need teachers for Special Education classes,” Sengebau added. “We can train them as long as they have experience in teaching or working with children with disability.”

Sengebau said that interested applicants may have their resumes and papers ready because processing of the application takes time.

“We still have to wait for the official announcement from the government. Then we will submit their application to the personnel office of the Ministry of Education,” Sengebau explained.

She added that the applicants should be able to read and write good English, not necessarily Palauan. “Since most children with disability are non-verbal, they just respond to actions.”

English is necessary because students enrolled at Special Ed programs are from different nationalities, including Filipinos, Chinese, American.

Applicants should be above 21 years old. Contact Special Education Program at 4882568 for more information.
