Schools join 2010 Health and Wellness Fair poster making contest

Beach Road Magazine,  Glimpses Advertising and Glimpses Publications are sponsoring the event.

Susan Marchitti, Beach Road magazine account manager and event coordinator, said yesterday she was “overwhelmed” by the response of the schools.

She said the event aims to “increase the visibility of health and wellness resources within the community.”

The fair will be held on Nov. 20 at the Civic Center tennis court in Susupe from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The theme is “Eat Better, Play Harder, Live Healthier, Learn Easier, Wellness is a Way of Life!,” which is also the motto of the Public School System’s  food and nutritional services program.

Among the schools that have expressed interest in the contest are  Koblerville Elementary School, William S. Reyes Elementary School, Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School, Whispering Palms School, Seventh-Day Adventist Elementary School, Tanapag Elementary School, Tinian Elementary School, Rota Elementary School,

Saipan Southern High School, Hopwood Junior High School and Saipan Community School.

A participating student must create a poster based on the theme.

The picture must be on 11 x 17 paper and the student may use colored pencils, felt pens, crayons, paint, chalk or watercolors to create the design.

Marchitti said they have two categories: one for 11 years old and under, and one for 12 years old and above.

She said all entries must be submitted on Nov. 12.

The top three winners will be featured with their pictures in an upcoming issue of Beach Road Magazine.

Among the goals of the health and wellness fair are:

• To increase personal health awareness among participants;

• To motivate participants to make positive health behavior changes;

• To provide a variety of health screening and educational materials;

• To provide participants with preventive care information;

• To screen individuals for certain conditions; and,

• To enroll community members into social service programs.

“To achieve these goals we’d like information and health screening booths, demonstrations and exhibits, healthy food preparation tips and advice about proper nutrition, diet and exercise, athletes, sports clubs, information on stress reduction, vitamins, massage therapy, preventative care and everything else that promotes healthy living,” Marchitti said.

During the event, she said  visitors will have an opportunity to get immediate feedback on health issues, sample nutritious foods and drinks, and take home free health-related giveaways, and listen to motivated professionals and athletes deliver positive messages.

“We want them to come away with an enhanced sense of how to increase their health and improve their lifestyle not only for themselves but also for their families,” she added.

There will be possible demonstration and activities on CPR and First Aid, martial arts, Tai Chi, aerobic dancing, healthy cooking, proper use of exercise equipment, bike safety, massage therapy, self defense, and Q&A with a doctor or health practitioner.
