An e-mail forwarded to King and was circulated in the community stated that “politics is always alive with NMC and this time the hatchet men are Charles Reyes Jr. ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ and Galvin Deleon Guerrero against their continuing personal enemy Janet King.”
Deleon Guerrero is NMC’s director of institutional effectiveness.
Asked for comment, Reyes said he personally believes that reappointing King is “tantamount to NMC homicide.”
“I think Ms. King’s dismal record at NMC speaks for itself. The [Western Association of Schools and Colleges] report of her administration was damning,” he said.
This reporter tried but failed to get a comment from Deleon Guerrero.
Reyes denied influencing the governor’s office to block the reappointment of King, saying that the former NMC chairwoman overestimated his influence.
“I am no longer with the governor’s office,” he said. “Ms. King should not use me as a scapegoat for her own botched administration of NMC.”
King thanked Gov. Benigno R. Fitial for allowing her to serve on the NMC board and the members of the college community.
“It has been my pleasure to have served NMC and the people of the commonwealth,” she said.
Reyes said he was “appalled” by King’s behavior on the NMI Humanities Council.
Reyes is no longer a member of the council’s board.
“She was unbearable and constantly creating conflict and dysfunction. I offered to resign if she would also resign for the good of the board and the council. She refused, probably in part because of the inter-island travel perks, in my opinion,” he said.
King said: “Please get a comment from the [council] if [Reyes’s claims are] true.”
Reyes said he asked the governor to take both of them off the board for the good of the board and make new appointments.
The governor never acted on his recommendation, he said. King is still a member of the council’s board.
“I could no longer tolerate working with her. I suspect Charles Cepeda, the former chair of NMC, also resigned out of similar frustration with King,” he added.
Reyes said if King is re-appointed and continued as chair another NMC board member might also resign.
“I wish Charles P. Reyes Jr. the best of luck in his personal pursuits, even if unfortunately the ongoing personal conflict between us continues to be a public embarrassment for both of us,” King said.
In 2009, Reyes filed a small claim action again King, but it was dismissed by the court.
Reyes said King’s public comments show that she does not care for the best interests of NMC, now that she is no longer its chair.
“She doesn’t care if NMC suffers more adverse publicity when accreditation is in grave danger. From my experience, and in my view, she won’t hesitate to attack the institution she is a part of, or was a part of, if she doesn’t get what she wants, especially travel perks and other benefits,” he said.
According to King, a Tinian resident, “For official business to Saipan on behalf of NMC (and even for the Humanities Council) I declined the benefit of a car rental and money for gas and used my own personal vehicle and bought my own gas. Being a board member is not about so-called travel perks. Traveling to Saipan is a requirement. The time and energy and overall commitment of volunteering on any board can be quite overwhelming. But serving on the board is about service to your community and to the public and doing what good you can as much as you can, something that escapes Mr. Reyes’s comprehension as he is so driven by opposition against Tinian, and by extension, Rota, board members’ travel to Saipan.”
King noted that Reyes continues to make public comment against her, even on Facebook.
Reyes described King as “The Empress Dowager, Madame Chang Kai Shek, Mrs. Chairman Mao, Imelda.”
