Man hits electric pole causing power outage not yet identified

BPS Director Norvert H. Yano said they still locating the suspect along with his companions after they fled away after the accident.

According to the police report, the white color Suzuki Escudo Jeep with unknown plate number hit the electric pole in Ngerdersar Aimeliik . The jeep was believed to have three to four occupants but they fled away immediately before the police arrived.

Suspects left the vehicle in the area with smashed windshield and window.

The car accident caused power outage in some parts of Koror and Babeldaob.

According to Palau Public Utilities Corporation (PPUC) the power outage experienced on the evening of September 18, 2010 at around 8:20 pm affecting the 13.8 KV feeders Airai-Airport and Airai-Koror was due to the presence of ground fault on the 34.5 KV transmission line between Aimeliik Power Plant and Malakal Power Plant. Operators tried to reclose the 34.5 KV transmission lines but it tripped off again. PD crew was advised to patrol the lines. It was found out that an alleged white jeep hit the 34.5 KV concrete power pole causing it to lean and detached the transmission wires touching the cross arm.

PD crew retied the transmission wires to the insulators temporarily and power was restored on 34.5 KV transmission lines and Airai-Airport and Airai-Koror 13.8 KV Feeders respectively.

PPUC Information Officer Tmetuchl Baules, said the people who knocked out the power by hitting the power pole will be responsible for the damages as well as the outage to the public. He said that although police has not yet identified those people behind, PPUC identified the jeep and the owner of the vehicle.
