Toribiong received the check during the ROC 99th national day celebration held on Friday at the Palasia Hotel.
The amount will be used by the government to purchase 3,900 sets of solar LED lights to be distributed to the students and households in the offshore States and remote areas.
Tien said the lights will be distributed according to the households and students enrolled.
“One light from Taiwan project will benefit specially those in offshore islands and remote areas of Babeldaob.”Tien said during the celebration of ROC’s 99th national day. “This is just the latest example of solid commitments of my government to our ally to further strengthen our cooperation, partnership, co-prosperity and alliance.”
These five watts, portable solar lights have longer batteries. After charging for about four to eight hours under the sun, the lights can be used for up to 10 hours.
Delegate Lentcer Basilius, chairman on the Committee of Energy Communication and Transportation for his part also said that the solar project of Taiwan is part of the joint resolution of the House of Delegates and the Senate on the energy policy.
He said that under the resolution a lot of stake holders especially the donor countries were involved in the creation of energy policy and the Embassy of Taiwan was part of it.
This resolution he said it gives a road map or guidelines for each donor country to commit and also for Palauan itself in the implementation of renewable energy policy.
The aim of the energy policy is to save energy of up to 20 percent by the year of 2020.
Aside from energy savings, Taiwan also said the solar lights will also encourage students to read at night.
Some of the areas being targeted to distribute solar lights are the States of Kayangel and Angaur as well as the Babeldaob States.
