The amendment was introduced by Sen. Hokkons Baules and was supported by his colleagues as the measure was passed on second reading.
The proposed measure calls for a referendum which will allow the public to decided whether they approve of a casino gaming in Palau and the establishment of a gaming commission to review proposals from investors.
The House Bill 8-69-5 version calls for the establishment of a gaming commission first, then a referendum after.
The original proposals stated that the commission which will receive proposals from investors who wishes to engage in casino gaming in Palau.
The Senate version stated meanwhile, 45 days after the measure has been signed into law, a referendum is scheduled giving the community the decision on the fate of the casino in Palau.
The House version was authored by Del. Jerry Nabeyama.
The measure revives the casino gaming issue in the country.
According to the measure, one of the functions of the commission will be to internationally solicit proposals qualified firms and investors who wish to engage in casino gaming operations in Palau.
The members of the commission will be composed of 10 people.
Earlier President Johnson Toribiong has vetoed a casino bill, describing it as a get-rich-quick scheme that will not benefit Palau.
