Over 5,000 workers register at the Immigration

Mariur, however, said that they still working on the total number of foreign workers trooped at the Immigration office during the Sept. 30 deadlines.

Meanwhile, the director also explained that after the last week deadline there will be no more registration set by the Immigration for alien workers.

He said that they have to wait the court decision especially those alien workers who failed to register on Thursday. And for those alien workers who were already paid $25 and asking for refund, Mariur added that they also have to wait the court decision to decide on the matter.

During the Sept. 30 deadline of alien registration, BOI did not collect $25 fees following the Supreme Court decision granting the preliminary injunction to temporary half the collection of fees while the case is being tried.

The preliminary injunction on the class action lawsuit was filed by plaintiff Bernadette H. Carreon, on behalf of the alien workers against the Palau Government and President Johnson Toribiong which questions the legality of the alien registration scheme because it violates equal protection of the Constitution.

There are at least 6,000 foreign workers in Palau.
