Taiwan vessel runs aground in Airai Reef

Portia Franz, Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Board said that the fishing boat registered to PITI hit the reef on Aug. 16.

Franz said that a notice of violation was issued to the captain of the boat.

Franz said that although the board has not determined the fines yet, the boat can be fined up to $10,000 a day.

The first attempt to remove the vessel was unsuccessful on Aug. 25 and on Aug. 30, EQPB was notified that Francis Toribiong will help the vessel be removed from the reef.

Toribiong said that they went to the site yesterday and assessed how it can be removed from the reef.

He said the boat has scraped the reef. EQPB said the fuel inside the boat has been removed.

Toribiong said he has seven people to help him take the boat out of the reef.
