PICRC helps reduce carbon footprints

In its efforts to help reduce CO2 on the planet, PICRC’s employees were asked not to turn on lights all month unless it is really necessary. They were also asked not to turn on their air conditioning until 9:00 a.m. if they get to work early.

10:10:10 is a global movement to help decrease the CO2 presence on earth “10 percent at a time”. Organizations all over the world gathered for events and activities to do something positive to address climate change on Sunday, October 10, 2010.

“We started it on October 4,” Carol Emaurois, Head of Environmental Education at PICRC, said in an interview. “It’s just supposed to be for one week. But we decided to do it until the end of October and hopefully get to practice it for good.”

Emaurois said their electricity consumption at PICRC is quite high because of the Aquarium so they are hoping that by limiting the use of unnecessary lights and air conditioning they will be able to it cut down.

“Our utility approximately ranges from $8,000 to $10,000 a month. We have to do something about it,” she said.

Across the world, thousands of people took simple steps to reduce their carbon emissions. “It’s all about taking a small step at a time,” Emaurois said, “by not using energy, by planting trees, by walking and not using cars to work.”

“It’s a global action to bring the CO2 number down,” she said. “We can’t do it all at once; we can only do it in portion.”

PICRC also assembled at the back of their office with signs and placards supporting the 350 and 10:10:10 causes.
