Toribiong proclaims Oct. to Jan. as alcohol and drug abuse prevention months

The Red Ribbon Months were initiated in the United States as a means to focus on the prevention of alcohol and other drug use and abuse. Alcohol is a drug that is the cause of much death and destruction in Palau and excessive alcohol consumption accounts for the great majority of car accidents.

Under the Presidential Proclamation (PP) No. 10-29, friends, family concerned citizens must do their part by not allowing persons to drive while impaired by alcohol or other drugs.

All persons are asked to assist by alerting police officers to drunk and drugged drivers and by cooperating at sobriety checkpoints.

Everyone in the community needs to be involved in the campaign against the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs.

Toribiong also asked each citizen to make a conscious effort to ensure a safe and healthy holiday season and to take part in this observance and the activities designed to advance the cause of prevention and control of alcohol and other drug use and abuse.

People are urged to tie a red ribbon to their car antenna and show their solidarity against drunk and drugged driving.

The PP was signed on Oct. 20 at Capitol, Melekeok State.
