Guam’s Camacho won’t run for governor again

Camacho, who  beat Democrat Robert Underwood in the 2002 and 2006 gubernatorial elections, cannot immediately seek a third term this year.

He also reiterated his support for his Republican Party’s gubernatorial slate, Sens. Eddie Calvo and Ray Tenorio, who are running against the Democratic team of former Gov. Carl T.C. Gutierrez and Sen. Frank Aguon.

Camacho said he knows that every administration has its own ideas on how to run the government, but the focus on Guam right now is to maximize the opportunities that will be created by the military buildup.

The government of Guam, he added, has many ongoing projects and programs, but the key is to continue its partnership with the private sector to create more jobs.

The next administration, he added, will have to focus on tourism and transportation and continue working with the U.S. Department of Defense.

Cooperation  with other Pacific islands as well as Asian countries like the Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan is also important, he added.

Perhaps, Camacho said, his successor may want to build a relationship with China in the future.

But maintaining strong ties with the federal government will always be critical, he added.
