San Antonio school to start cultural celebration today

“We really need the involvement of the parents in raising  awareness about the different cultures in the community and to strengthen the relationship between students and teachers,” Rita Carreon, event coordinator, told Variety.

This year’s theme is “The Spirit of Culture — Embracing our Unique Ways.”

Carreon said the school was not able to hold its cultural week last year because of its other activities.

“But this year we’ll have lots of programs,” she added.

Today, the first day of Cultural Spirit Week, will feature the “paint your face” event — students will paint their faces with a symbol of the culture they would like to represent.

On Tuesday, students will wear  cultural attires, and flowers, leis, or mwars on the following day.

“Classes will not be postponed while the program is held in each classroom,” Carreon said

Each student will present and explain what he or she is wearing and symbolizing.

On Thursday, students will wear red, white and blue representing the United States of America.

On Friday, during the culmination of the celebration, students are encouraged to bring any cultural dish which they will present  to the class.

Carreon said students who bring food will be given extra credit in their social studies subject.

Bringing food, however, is voluntary, she added.

The program is supported by the Chamorro Carolinian Language Heritage Studies and the co-event coordinator for this year is Beverly Surla.

“The students are very excited and the parents are also supporting this event,” Carreon said.
