Aside from the three ongoing basketball events, the other community sports like the fun run on Banzai Cliff, the private school volleyball and fundraising golf tournaments that are scheduled from Friday to Sunday were all cancelled due to the typhoon which was anticipated to be strong with 133 mph gust of winds.
The Basketball Association of Northern Mariana Islands cancelled the games of IT&E Inter-government & Business Basketball League and the Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League that are scheduled last Friday and Saturday.
BANMI league coordinator, Ponce Rasa Jr. said both leagues will resume as soon as the weather gets better and flood waters subsides.
“Please understand that these are precautionary measures that league organizers must take to ensure the safety and welfare of the members of teams participating in Inter-Government/Business Basketball League as well as the Saipan Youth Rotary leagues,” Rasa said.
Micronesian Brokers Inc., was supposed to face Public School System, the Customs to face Tinian on Oct. 2, and the Hyatt Regency Saipan against Customs on Oct. 3.
In the 2009 Miller Lite Invitational Cup in Gualo Rai Basketball Court, the games between Triple J and DL Cooking Gas; E&E versus Club Wonderful on Oct. 2; Tropical Laundry versus Mekeni Abe Archers and Westco versus Diamond Fixers were also cancelled.
The middle school and high school teams in the Coalition of Private School volleyball games were also cancelled, as well the as last Saturday’s game of the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association’s Youth Fall League.
Residents of NMI were advised to brace for the impact as early as Friday but the wrath of Typhoon Melor was felt from late in the afternoon Saturday through early morning of Sunday.
