of ownership from a person who wants to trade an item for cash.
According to one pawnshop employee, the only time they will have second thoughts about an item is when the client “looks suspicious — then I have the right to refuse the item.”
A domestic helper admitted that she sometimes pawn the jewelry of her employer who is always off-island for business trips.
“But I make sure that I redeem it before she gets back,” she said.
A client has at least three months to redeem or renew the item pawned.
The pawnshop may sell the item if not redeemed.
A student of Northern Marianas College, who also declined to be identified, said she asks her adult friend to pawn her jewelry whenever she runs out of cash.
“They won’t mind if the jewelry is not hers,” she said. “They don’t check anyway.”
In earlier interviews, some students said pawnshops are one of the places where they could buy cheap, because stolen, laptops.
One student said a Toshiba HP laptop bought from eBay or an authorized dealer costs about $700 to $1,500 depending on the model while a stolen laptop costs about $300-$500 only.
