US conducts workshop for Yap officials

provide Yap state officials and disaster management colleagues summary and key features of the USAID response and reconstruction model for the FSM.

Under the amended Compact with the U.S. government, the responsibility to “save lives and to protect property” during a disaster in the FSM was transferred from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to USAID.

FEMA will still play a role in the process of getting needed aids to the FSM during disaster although its effort will be channeled through USAID for coordination.

During the workshop, the International Organization for Migration was cited as a key partner to support USAID in complying with its mandate under the amended Compact.  While USAID will be based out of Majuro, the IMO will establish presence in Yap to “manage and implement various planning, pre-positioning, mitigation and disaster emergency relief and reconstruction activities.”   It is expected that a local hire will assist IMO in manning a warehouse for pre-positioned equipment and supplies.

Participants to the workshop included representatives from State departments and agencies that are also first responders for state disasters.
