Four Australian Federal Police in Palau to assess police operation

Australian Federal Police Paul O’ Brien, Peter Williams, Chris Barnes and Sally Fairbrother arrived last week and will be here for a couple of days to observe the police operation to see what kind of assistance will be given to Bureau of Public Safety.

The Federal officers had meetings with Director Norvert Yano and Minister Johnny Gibbons to discuss forthcoming trainings for all BPS officers.

“They are here to basically assess the operation of police force in Palau to see if we lack anything or if we need any improvement in the leadership development then from there they will provide training necessity to upgrade one of the weaknesses that we have in the police force so we are very appreciative of their program to have included Palau in their police force,” Minister Gibbons said in an interview during the oath taking ceremony for the new police officers and firefighters on Friday.

“Their program is international and we are happy that they extended their program to cover Palau,” Gibbons added.

Fairbrother in a separate interview said that they are here to provide assistance to Palau in terms of improving the police force.

“We’re looking into some training that we can offer to the Palau police and we are observing and making assessment so that we will know what kind of assistance we can give,” she said.

It’s their first time to Palau and she said though they find the places “very hot” they find that people are nice and hospitable.
