PSP on campus

You may have seen your seatmate playing with this gadget or may have spotted a few students at the hallway game-sharing with this small device. That gadget is called PSP.

What makes this gadget trendy?

PSP or Play Station Portable as they call it comes in different models and it has a variety of purposes as well. It is made and programmed by the electronic giant, Sony.

“I see PSP everywhere as if everybody has one,” said John Torres, a NMC student said. “You can listen to music with it, you can play games in it, you can surf the net with it and you can save files in it.”

The features of the gadget make it a necessity and not just a luxury to students. With its external memory attached, the PSP also serves as an instant flash drive.

“One feature I love in every PSP model is that it can play music in MP3 or MP4 formats,” said Fuji SIonosa, a student of International Business and Professional College.  “I could carry it in my pockets with my ear phones connected to it and here I am chillin’ with rock tunes,” he added.

According to him, the gadget is as good as his laptop because of its Wi-fi feature, onscreen keypad, Skype, music playing feature, video and photo viewing capability.

Compare and contrast

With the model PSP go, the latest model released by Sony, Sionosa is able to download as much as 16 gigabytes of games. The gadget has the largest internal memory among the other PSP 1000, 2000 and 3000.

According to the official website of PSP, PSP go could be purchased for as low as $199. It is a bit expensive compared to older models of PSPs.

“It’s worth the buy because of its 16gig memory, unique sleek and small design, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Skype features and copyright feature,” Sionosa added.

PSP go is the only PSP that is not easily hacked. Because of this, it cannot play games that are not originally from Sony.

This gadget is only good for those who buy games, Sionosa said.

He hopes that there will soon be a way to allow the new PSP go to play any games that are not originally from Sony.

PSP go was released in the U.S. last month and on Japan earlier this month. It hit the markets here just this month.

“I am happy with the PSP 3000 I have,” Jhen Cabrera of NMC said. According to her, PSP 3000 saves her from buying games from the internet. “I had my gadget fixed so  now I can just download free games from the net or ask my friends for some [games].” she added.

According to her, she listens to music and surf the net through her PSP while waiting for her next class.

Cabrera owns a limited edition of the Hannah Montana pink PSP.

But unlike PSP go, PSP 3000, 2000 and 1000 has no internal memory and depends only in the external memory which ranges from 2GB to 4GB. “You can purchase 16GB external memory but it’s so expensive that you’re like buying a new PSP,” Cabrera said.

The feature of PSP 2000 is almost the same as PSP 3000.  Both gadgets can play UMB games. UMB are game cassettes that are inserted in the UMB slot at the back of the gadgets. However, PSP 2000 lacks the Skype feature of the PSP 3000. Among all models of PSP, 1000 is the thickest gadget .

Cabrera, Sionosa and Torres are not the only teens that are into PSP.

Everyday, in the afternoon, the hallways of NMC and IBPC is jam packed with students waiting for their classes with their PSP’s. Skaters roaming around the island are also seen carrying this small gadget and listening to music and surfing the net with it.
