Leaseholders of Ngerumetek to meet with Airai officials

The parties are scheduled to meet on Wednesday at 6 pm to resolve the concerns addressed by some of the members of the community who opposed the project because it will affect them as far as pollution and noise are concerned.

Airai State Governor Vicky Kanai said that the Airai State Public Lands Authority as a lessor is inviting all of the occupants of the Ngerumetek for a special meeting on Wednesday to discuss the issue surrounding the Palau airport Secondary Apron project.

The governor said the purpose of the meeting is for all of the concerned parties including lessor, lessees, appropriate State authorities and appropriate National authorities to resolve the issue.

The Airai State officials invited 25 leaseholders to attend the meeting which will be held at the State Office.

On December 1, President Johnson Toribiong sent a letter to the members of the community and assured the residents of Ngerusar, Airai, that the Administration will address their concerns.

A petition has been circulating in oppose of the project. To date, some 400 signatures have been gathered.

The petition stated that the project entails the building of a parking space for airplanes and installation of a new fuel tank.

The residents raised the issue on noise pollution, land tremors due to airplanes taking off and landing, fuel tank promixity and emergency action during a spill or accidental explosion.

The residents stated that airport authorities assured them that a boundary fence will be erected 100 feet from the lease boundaries.

The residents said that the agreement that a fence will be put up have not been updated into the project plans.
