US House OKs Guam political status bill

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo announced on Tuesday.

H.R. 3940 passed on a voice vote one month after Bordallo, D-Guam, introduced the bill.

H.R. 3940 will now be transmitted to the U.S. Senate for consideration in their chamber, according to a press release from Bordallo’s office.

The bill is supported by the Obama administration, Guam’s elected leaders, and decolonization and indigenous rights advocates, said Bordallo.

Some residents, however, have raised questions as to the legality of having a “native inhabitants” vote as opposed to a vote open to all residents of Guam.
