Military seeks public comments on Guam buildup

The deadline for submission is on Feb. 17.

The draft EIS was made available to the public in November of last year and was prepared in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act.

This law aims to “promote efforts which will prevent or eliminate damage to the environment and biosphere and stimulate the health and welfare of man.”

The 40-page draft EIS states its goals to inform the public about the environmental consequences of the  military build-up and the actions and measures that will be taken to protect, restore and enhance the environment.

The draft discusses  the environmental impact of the proposed Guam military relocation, the actions to be taken by the Marine Corps, the Army and the Navy, and mitigation measures that will be taken to avoid, minimize, rectify, and reduce the environmental impact.

Last year, due to the plan of making Tinian a military training ground as part of the buildup, a group of archaeologists visited the island to solicit public comments.

Archaeologist Valerie Curtis and Dr. Eric West also held public meetings on Guam and Saipan and assured residents that their comments and suggestions made will be included in the final draft.
