According to librarian Mary Arius, they offer a wide range of free services that include “Read-a-Loud” programs for children, computer literacy workshops, “movie nights” as well as free access to the Internet.
“All of the services offered at the library are free,” Arius said. “But there has been a slight misunderstanding as to who can use the library.”
Arius said patrons of the library must have a library card in order to use the library and take advantage of the services it offers.
“Without a valid library card, a patron will not be able to check out books or use the computers in the library,” Arius said.
She said they will be issuing free library cards to residents of Palau and charge a minimal fee for cards issued to visitors.
Residents and visitors must fill out application forms in order to receive their cards.
“People interested in obtaining a library card must present a valid and current identification card (driver’s license, passport, work permit, or birth certificate) prior to applying for a library card,” Arius said. “Minors (14 and under) must have their applications co-signed by their parents or guardians.”
She added that non-citizen residents are also eligible for the free library cards.
Tourists and visitors who want to obtain a library card will be charged a fee of $10.
Cards issued to tourists or visitors are valid for three months.
The library is open daily during regular working hours inclusive of lunch hours. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the library’s hours extend to 7 p.m.
“We are hoping for the public to make use of the resources the library has to offer,” Arius said. “We have extended our hours to accommodate students and other patrons to have free access to the library.”
