I regret that due to personal and financial reasons, we had to leave so soon…and just when the hard working team at the zoning office was making so many important steps in the right direction. Although Planning and Zoning can’t solve the immediate threats facing the CNMI, it is the key to the long-term development, sustainable growth, and betterment of island life and must be defended and supported enthusiastically by the people and government of the CNMI.
I hope I started a real dialog among the powers that be, and I make myself available as a sounding board to facilitate the conversation in the months and years to come. I would like to offer the good people of the zoning board and the government my continued assistance in planning, zoning code development, and energy solutions in whatever way I can.
The CNMI is facing serious economic and energy challenges, but I think they are very solvable. I can’t help think that the commonwealth should extend both hands and embrace its chosen partnership with America, and do so with all the island’s strategic advantages. What if Washington was presented with a real plan, a forward thinking road map to encourage and host the best America offers in technology, education, and sustainable development? A plan highlighting the rich and unique Chamorro and Carolinian cultures, creating a powerful alliance with America that positioned Saipan as THE prosperous gateway to the Asian economic superpowers blossoming just off its shores?
I feel past leaders of the CNMI may have underestimated the island’s value and potential for global influence. This may be a once in a lifetime opportunity for the hardworking people of the CNMI. The new leaders of the 17th Legislature have an extraordinary chance to pull back from the brink and establish a solid lead in the new emerging East meets West economic paradigm. As China takes center stage in the global economy, America needs the CNMI more than ever. The current economic, political, and energy crisis has created a “perfect storm,” and the CNMI is America’s lifeboat in the Pacific. The path is clear and bright for those who understand what is really happening.
In the words of Jimmy Buffet, “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes.” Well, this string of Pacific island pearls and its people have been blessed with the latitude, and I for one believe that with a simple change of attitude, the CNMI could enter a golden age of prosperity.
Best wishes to everyone.
