Tourists can change status to worker bill introduced

Senate Bill 8-132 proposed that non-citizen legally present in Palau under any visa may change his of her visa status to that of an employment visa and may receive a work identification certificate while remaining in the country.

Under the measure the tourist will be allowed that the person pay a change of status fee to the Chief of the Division of Labor and meet any other requirements established by regulation.

The measure also includes a provision which will also allow nonresident workers to be eligible for renewal up to the end of the final day of its effective term without being subject to review or penalty.

The current immigration regulation disallows tourists from seeking jobs in Palau.

However, prior to the issuance of that regulation, it was lawful for tourists to look for jobs in Palau and change immigration status to workers.

Earlier there were a number of foreigners duped to Palau with the promise of jobs from illegal recruiters, thus the immigration decided to issue the regulation.
