With the help of Palau Red Cross Society, the office of the Chief of Staff distributed several donation boxes in strategic locations in Koror. Last Friday, they held an all-day fundraising drive by setting up tents in front of the Ministry of Education where people can just drive thru and drop their donations.
According to Miriam Chin, Director of Palau Red Cross Society, as of 5:00 pm Friday, they were able to raise a little over $4,000, and counting.
“People are very generous,” she said. “A lot of people are coming in, dropping by to give their donations. Sometimes they don’t have time to stop by and they just give the donations to the students who are helping us in this drive.”
The tragedy that struck Haiti has turned into an opportunity for people all over the world to help. “Despite the fact that everyone is hurt by the economic crunch, people’s spirit of kindness is showing,” Chin shared.
She said she’s happy that a lot of people came to donate. “We appreciate that very much,” she stressed. “People realize that, of course, this may not be the best of times, but there are others that are in a lot worse situations that we are.”
People’s generosity, she added, comes out at these times. “It’s unfortunate but you get to see the best of people at times like this.”
People can still drop by the Red Cross office any time to give their donations.
