1,000 runners to join Saipan Marathon

Last year, 655 runners from Japan, Korea, CNMI and Guam vied for the crown, and because the success and every runner’s great experience in the event spread like wild fire in the participating countries afterwards, the MVA estimated to have 1,000 runners this time.

“It’s easy to understand why the race is so popular.  The course is superior to the Hawaii marathon, offering runners plentiful ocean views as well as experiencing the other advantages of the Northern Marianas,” Marinas Visitors’s Authority said.

The MVA announced yesterday that the Saipan Marathon, one of the islands’ major sports events will be held on March 6, so those who wish to participate again have until Feb. 5 to sign up.

The organizers targeted to expand the number of participants in order to compete with the Hawaii and Hong Kong marathons, and the anticipated increase in media coverage will also reflect the growth of the marathon.

The big race includes full marathon that runs 26.2 miles of 42.195 kilometer; a half marathon, 13.1 miles or 21.1K; and fun run of 10km of 6.2 miles.

Runners include those 19 and under, 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; and 50 and up, and the top male and top female finisher in the marathon only (not half marathon or 10K fun run) will receive $1,000 each.

The entrance fee for the full marathon is $55.00, with $45.00 for the half marathon and fun run.  Contestants who sign up before 5 p.m. of Feb. 5 will avoid a late fee of $10.00.

After Feb 5, registration for the full marathon will be $65 with $55 for the half marathon and fun run.

The final day of registration will be on Feb. 25 at 5 pm., at the MVA office on Beach Road.

“MVA is happy to organize this popular annual race,” MVA Managing Director Perry Tenorio said.

“It’s a very attractive course for the participants, and the Northern Mariana Islands are close to Asia, with easy access.  Plus runners only need to pack their shoes – these racers don’t incur the costs of shipping equipment or other sporting gear.  We look forward to welcoming all our visiting athletes and making this an unforgettable event for them and our homegrown contestants,” he added.
