CUC wants to finish Agingan rehabilitation project this year

$1.4 million in federal capital improvement funds have been allocated for this project.

Last year, CUC decided not to pursue the proposed construction of a wastewater treatment plant in Kagman because of  environmental concerns.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said the wastewater treatment project cannot be constructed in the area covered by a watershed project.

Christi Lazaro, CUC water and wastewater engineer, said the agency secured a $3.1 million  grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior in 2009 and $1.8 million in 2010.

She said the $1.4 million funding for fiscal year 2009 came from the old funds reallocated from Kagman sewer grant project.

Lazaro said the initial draining of sewer basins has started for the Sadog Tasi wastewater treatment plant rehabilitation project, which is funded by a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant of $1.1 million.

It will be completed on Nov. 8, 2010, and the total cost of the project is $1.6 million.

CUC will also upgrade the Sadog Tasi water and wastewater and sewer collection lines, Lazaro said.

The rehabilitation includes the replacement of the asbestos sewerline, particularly in the Garapan tourist district, she added.

Saipan has two wastewater treatment plants — one in Agingan which serves the southern part of the island, and the other in Sadog Tasi which receives sewage from the northern villages.
