Saipan, Tinian under high wind advisory as Tropical Depression 08W moves west of the Marianas

The CNMI Joint Information Center, in coordination with the CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management Office and the National Weather Service – Guam, advises the public that Tropical Depression 08W continues to bring gusty winds and periods of heavy rain across Tinian and Saipan this Tuesday morning.

Based on the latest forecast, the system is expected to continue moving west of the Marianas through the day. Tropical storm-force winds are not currently expected over Tinian and Saipan, but conditions may still include sustained winds of 20 to 35 mph and gusts up to 50 mph, especially in heavier showers.

Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are possible today, Tuesday, with locally higher amounts in isolated heavy showers. Residents should remain alert for brief periods of reduced visibility and localized flooding in low-lying areas.
