Travis August, KSSWM recycling center manager, said the landfill will no longer accommodate the volume of garbage in the next couple of years and tapping Babeldaob in Airai State as the possible place to transfer the landfill.
Travis, however said they are trying to manage waste disposal to expand the life of the Koror landfillin order to avoid the transfer in Airai.
He said if the landfill will be transferred to Babeldaob the Koror State Government (KSG) will spend a sizeable amount of money.
“ We pay for fuel, the staff to drive and bring the waste to Babeldaob, and we are trying to save money for Koror.” Travis added.
He said they are conducting educational activities such as public hearing, newspaper articles and school education training on waste segregation and recycling.
The KSSWM urges students, women’s group as well as the Philippine Community- these groups have major roles in educating the public.
Travis believes that through education and training, the lifespan of the landfill will be extended to three more years.
He said use of incinerator in Koror is not advisable, “the incinerator is expensive as well as its maintenance. It will also contribute to global warming.”
The KSG is now working with the Solid Waste Management national office to look for an area in Babeldaob to relocate the landfill other than Airai State.
