I had a rather brief but enlightening conversation with a friend who obviously has been keeping track of the “steps” our elected leaders – a long list of barefaced citizens who have taken turns taking oaths to run almost everything from the state level to national level – have made to ease the burdens of our taxed lives and simultaneously, committed “dedicated efforts” to inform everyone of the “next steps.”
I gather from conversing with my friend that “the next steps” would probably not be taken because no one wants to step on other people’s toes and that none of those who run for office wants to put a foot in a muddled puddle to figure its depth – no one wants to be dirtied.Quite the contrary, everyone is happy to chart a new path on which he or she would make the first step.
If, according to my friend, we somehow manage to put all the first steps together, we would have new version of the jitterbug – not choreographed, yet looks pleasing.
I cannot dance the jitterbug – let alone a choreographed routine. The steps of the dance are too difficult for me to follow and I get confused. My left foot refuses to follow my right foot; and hence, on special occasions when my wife (a jitterbug enthusiast) bullies me unto the dance floor, I basically just jump around – to an accolade of cheers. But as soon as the music stops and I walk off the dance floor, true friends are guaranteed to let me know that I danced like an idiot. I need to learn all the steps of the jitterbug – one of these days I just might be an embarrassment to my wife.
I do not know much about where our governments (state and national) should progress to or how they get to where they are going but I now know that the first steps have been taken – there should be none left. The very first elected leaders to take the helms of the governments took the first steps and set us on course – forward, not up.They relied on archaic navigation systems, but they followed routes that led to definite destinations. Now we are here.
I sense reluctance in taking the next steps – and this may be due to the length of the strides necessary for feet to settle beyond the first steps or the fact that most of us walk for leisure (and hopefully relocate some of the excess fat to less obvious locations) or run to get away from something.Whatever the reason maybe, we need to move beyond the first steps.
I am definitely not a step master or an advocate of the AA Steps program, but I do know how to jump.I recommend a gigantic leap of faith – one that covers the steps that should have been taken – for everyone.Let’s just jump forward together – not one at a time but all at once – and see where we land.At the very least, when we look back, there would be no one behind us to blame.Get on the dance floor and jump around!
