Regents to decide Fernandez’s fate today

Board Chairwoman Janet King said they will discuss and review the report from the Attorney General Office which looked into the allegations against Fernandez.

The investigation conducted by the AGO was completed last week.

“A quorum of the seven members of the board of regents shall make a decision,” King said. “As far as I know, all the members are expected to show up to this very important meeting.”

She added, “The matters at hand  are too important for any regent to be absent.”

When asked about the AGO report, King said she had yet to see and review it. “It is premature to comment on what the outcomes will be after it is reviewed,” she added.

The board plans to act expeditiously and will not prolong the case, King said.

The board is committed to ensuring that all the parties’ rights are protected and due process is provided, she added.

Asked whether students and faculty members were also investigated, King said the board was unable to discuss specific matters concerning the probe.

“The board of regents and interim President Lorraine Cabrera are unwavering in their commitment to maintaining NMC’s accreditation and ensuring that academic programs and student services are not adversely affected during this transition period,” King added.

Fernandez was suspended on Jan. 12 immediately after the regents concluded their executive meeting on that day.
