KOROR (Palau Horizon) – The Ministry of Community and Cultural Affairs and the Palau National Olympic Committee urged women, and men, to celebrate the International Women’s Day on March 8 by joining the fun run and aerobics activities in Ngerulmud.
“The objective of the commission is to promote a healthy lifestyle by being active in the community,” said Baklai Temengil, Secretary General of Palau National Olympic Committee.
The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is “Equal Rights, Equal Opportunities: Progress for All.”The activity that’s going to take place is not just for women, but for all,” shared Minister Faustina K. Rehuher-Marugg of Ministry of Community and Cultural Affairs.
To commemorate the day, the Palau National Olympic Committee will organize a short, 2.5-km walk from Ngerulmud to the fire station and back starting at 4:00 p.m. “We will have another walk around the Capitol, an aerobics, and a short program toward the sunset,” Temengil added. The aerobics will be held at the courtyard.
The activities are open to the public, especially for all the staff at Ngerulmud. “We invite everyone from Babeldaob, Koror and specially those working in Ngerulmud to be prepared, have their walking shoes and comfortable clothes on and enjoy a little bit of exercise after work,” said Temengel.
The event is also meant to kick-off the 17th Women Conference in Palau which will be on April 7 and 8. The Palau women for Sports Commission will also be giving away 200 towels to make the day extra special.
Temengel wished to inform everyone that there’s no need for registration. “Just show up and be active,” she said.
International Women’s Day has been observed since the early 1900’s. It has now become a global day to celebrate political, economic and social achievements of women all over the world. In some countries, international women’s day is even considered a national holiday.
