Yap concludes cultural and traditional celebrations

COLONIA, Yap (Yap State Government) — The two-day festivities for Yap Day 2010  concluded in Tamor, Tomil after the last two dances performed by the women of the municipalities of Kanifay and Tomil.

The activities were in continuation of the program for the first day which also included recognition by Yap Visitors Bureau for visitors with frequent visits to Yap especially for the Yap Day Festivities.

Aside from the cultural and demonstration activities and dances performed, the Yap Department of Resources andDevelopment’s Division of Agriculture also displayed all kinds of agricultural products and announced winners in each of the categories.

It was during the agricultural product award that the representative of Yap Women’s Association, Carmen Mutnguy, requested the head of all the visiting delegations to assist Yap find solutions to the decrease in local food products due to lack of methods in growing food crops on the islands.

She suggested that maybe the state leaders should look into a program, perhaps a vocational school in Yap where the children should learn the scientific method and blend it with the traditional techniques for farming — that way they would be able to produce enough local food not only for them but also for the future generations.

The conclusion of the festivities was just in time for the departure of most of the delegations that came to attend this year’s festivities except the Chinese delegation which is yet to complete its visits with several departments and offices including the traditional branch of the state government.

The largest delegation arrived from Palau and was led by President Johnson Toribiong.

There were also delegations from the U.S. and the Federated States of Micronesia’s national government.

The FSM delegation consisted of  President Emanuel Mori and his chief of staff Kasio Mida.

The U.S. delegation included Ambassador Peter Prahar, Mrs. Prahar and deputy chief of mission William Douglas.

Chinese Ambassador Zhang Weidong continues his visit in Yap, starting with the Department of Education and the two traditional Councils of Pilung and Tamol.

Today, he will have two separate meetings with the principal of Yap High School and the director of the College of Micronesia-FSM Yap Campus.
