PSA receives grant from Japan Government

The grant amounting to $50,309 will enable PSA to procure several much needed equipment to expand swimming education and water fitness programs as well as enable PSA to save cost in the overall operation for the swimming pool.

The Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) funds will be used to purchase an additional 12 in- pool platforms that will enable elementary school aged children to participate safely in swimming programs. This will also allow PSA to double the number of “learn-to-swim” classes and to integrate swimming into physical education program for schools in Koror. The platforms will also facilitate the access and use of the pool by senior citizens and persons with mobility impairment thereby expanding participation in water exercises designed to promote good health and to combat-communicable or lifestyle diseases.

Based on a review done on the pool operations, steps must be taken to combat the pervasive problem of algae growth in the pool resulting from Palau’s hot and humid climate and frequent heavy rains. The GGP funds will also help PSA to procure two additional sand filters, replace sand in the existing filters and install a UV system for disinfection. The additional filtration system and UV system will greatly reduce bacteria and viruses in the pool water thereby reducing the use of chlorine.

Ambassador Sadaoka said this grant meets the objectives of both GGP and PSA by developing sport of swimming for the purpose of health, fitness and safety as well as providing the opportunity for all Palauan residents to master essential swimming skills in a safe and infection free environment.
