Letter to the Editor: Questions for NMC’s King

The public is kept in the dark. Transparency in government at NMC has been compromised to the college’s detriment.  But important questions must still be asked.

One question concerns the status of Janice Tenorio, the former dean of student services. Whatever happened to this investigation?  Is it true that the case was referred to the Attorney General’s Office since November 2009 and that there was an investigation?  This is very serious as it allegedly involves federal funding.

The public has a right to know whether Janet King has been communicating with Janice Tenorio for a while.  If so, wouldn’t it be improper conduct for the chair of the board to be communicating with a former employee who is under investigation?

Janice Tenorio has reportedly been seen on NMC campus to meet with Janet King. Can Janet King confirm this, or will she again decline comment for legal or political reasons? Has Janice Tenorio been seen meeting with Lorraine Cabrera?  To some, it appears that Janice Tenorio is now friends with Janet King and has been helping Janet King against NMC President Carmen Fernandez. Is this true and is this the explanation for a possible cover up?

Well-placed sources believe the audit on Tenorio has been completed since January 2010, but Lorraine Cabrera is holding on to it.  Is Lorraine Cabrera part of a cover up?  What was her meeting with Janice Tenorio all about?  Was Cabrera assuring Tenorio not to worry about the investigation — or was she offering Tenorio a job from her and Janet King?  Is she getting a job offer for being on King’s side?

If improper expenditures are confirmed, NMC stands to lose thousands of dollars of federal grant funds and may also lose the Student Support Services program.  This possible cover up must be investigated.  When is the board of regents going to see that the King needs to be removed before more damage is done?  These are questions that urgently need to be answered, not refused, by Chairwoman King.

And, as stated by the students:  “We need our president, not a King.”  Amen.
