In an interview yesterday, Ogumoro, Covenant-Saipan, disclosed that the House Committee on Federal and Foreign Relations is now working with the Indigenous Affairs Office and indigenous people advocates’ regarding the referendum.
This is why public meetings on the issue of improved status for guest workers are continuously being held, Ogumoro said.
They want to let the people understand fully what they will vote for or against in the referendum this November, when the CNMI also holds its congressional delegate election.
The organizing committee is still working on the language of the question that will appear on the ballot, the vice speaker said.
She reiterated that the people of the CNMI must have their say on Interior’s recommendation, which is opposed by the Legislature and the administration.
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial is working with lawmakers to push for the referendum, she said.
“The referendum will happen,” Ogumoro added.
“We want the people to fully understand the issue before they make a decision,” she said.
