Residents advised to prepare for rain and wind as Invest 92W approaches

(Office of the Governor/CNMI Joint Information Center) — In coordination with the National Weather Service on Guam, the CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management Office is advising residents of Saipan, Tinian, Rota, and the Northern Islands to prepare for periods of heavy rain, gusty winds, and rough marine conditions as Invest 92W is expected to pass near the region late Thursday through Friday.

At this time, Invest 92W is unlikely to strengthen into a typhoon by the time it passes through the Marianas. The most likely scenario is passage of a weak tropical disturbance or tropical depression, though a tropical storm cannot be fully ruled out if the system organizes more quickly than expected over the next 48 hours.

Expected impacts Thursday, June 18, and Friday, June 19 (subject to change as Invest 92W continues to develop):

• Periods of heavy rain and gusty winds.

•  Locally heavy showers may continue across the islands.

•  Rougher marine conditions, with higher seas and surf possible along east-facing reefs and beaches.

•  Rainfall totals may generally range from 2 to 3 inches across Saipan, Tinian, and Rota, depending on the track.

Officials encourage residents to stay informed through official channels, monitor forecast information from NWS-Guam, secure outdoor items, and review household preparedness plans ahead of Thursday night and Friday.
