We can’t control or stop the escalating prices of fuel, and we cannot fill up our tanks with water to make it run but at least there’s something we can do to get more miles for every gallon of gasoline.
Last week’s green driving tips included getting rid of unnecessary junk in your car to lighten the load, changing your driving styles, and properly inflating your tires. Here are some more simple tips for you not only to save fuel while on the road but to make a difference in reducing gas emissions and saving our world.
• Regular car maintenance. Maintain the efficiency of your engine by getting your car serviced regularly. When was the last time you changed oil? Are you using the specified engine oil for your car?
• Reduce or get rid of accessories such racks or boxes on the roof of your car. These create extra resistance to the wind, making your car harder to drive and demanding more fuel consumption.
• Plan your routes and combine your trips. Do all your errands in one direction before going to the next destination, instead of going around in circles.
• Look for alternatives. If you are only going to the neighborhood store to buy something, you can walk or ride your bike. Aside from saving gas, you get some exercise.
• Wait until you are ready to go before you start the engine.
• Reduce usage of your car air-con. If you are driving around Saipan especially at night, roll down your windows and enjoy the breeze from the sea, or the fresh air. Air-con units increase your consumption of fuel.
• Stick to the speed limits. In the CNMI, driving over the speed limits will not only increase your fuel consumption but increase your risk of being apprehended by the traffic officers.
• Turn it off. If you have to wait for somebody for longer than three minutes, you can turn the car engine off and avoid waste of fuel.
