San Vicente’s young farmers to sell produce

Valrick Welch, the project coordinator, said the event will be held from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the bus shelter.

“We have papaya, tomato, basil, mint, oregano, beans, cucumber, eggplant, pepper, green onions, seedless tangerine and lemon plants,” he added.

The young farmers also produced gardenia, ilang-ilang, Kennedy hibiscus and zinnia flowering plants for sale.

These are all ready to plant or repot for one’s summer garden. Prices range from $3 to $7.

“Help support these hard-working students, grow your own healthy food and be a young farmer, too,” Welch said.

He said they will also have some mini-hydroponic systems to check out or buy.

All proceeds will go to the school.

Rick Gramlich, hydroponics manager, said the program will help educate community members to be self-sufficient by growing their own plants.

The program, which started last year, has already encouraged students to learn about farming.

The young farmers’ produce are also available on campus every day.

Gramlich said their program gained the support of the Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council as well as the farmers group on Saipan.

The Sabalu farmer offered the students a free table so they can sale their farm products during the weekly Sabalu Market, Gramlich said.
