House Committee on Education to finalize action on bill renaming NMC

Rep. Raymond D. Palacios, Covenant-Saipan and the committee chairman, said the panel members will discuss and decide on whether to endorse the passage of House Bill 17-41, which will rename NMC after the commonwealth’s first elected governor; House Bill 17-59,  to amend the Postsecondary Education Act of 1984; and Senate Bill 17-20, to suspend the mandatory driver education requirement among high school students applying for a driver’s license.

Negative and positive comments about the three bills were submitted to the committee.

The suspension of the driver education requirement received the most comments, including a petition from Kagman High School students and their principal, Alfred Ada, expressing strong support for the measure.

The Public School System, however, which will be mandated to offer driving lessons should S.B. 17-20 is enacted into law, opposed the measure mainly due to concerns regarding potential liabilities and the burden that it poses on its already limited resources.
