Alien registration set August

According to Immigration Director Jenkins Maruir, anyone who is parent or guardian of a child under the age of 18 years old is also required to register the child.

The fee for the registration is $25 and the registration schedule is open for the whole month of August.

Mariur said that anyone who fails to register on the given date will pay five dollars fine per day.

The director, however, said that those who are members of diplomatic mission, formally recognized by the Ministry of State and their families, citizens of United States, Federated State of Micronesia and Republic of the Marshall Islands are exempted from registration. Also with the tourists and those aliens present in Palau at any time during the first seven calendar days of August and depart before September 1.

Mariur said that aim of this registration is to prevent overstaying and undocumented foreigners.

He said that year 2000 was the last time when BOI implemented the registration scheme and will be reinstated this year.

It can be recalled that last month, five persons were arrested by the BOI for over staying. Three of them were Nigerians and two were Filipino.

Mariur said that after paying $500 fines they were deported back to their country.
