Public hearing on marijuana legalization set for next week

The same hearings are also intended to give the public the chance to comment on measures calling for the creation of the Second Marianas Political Status Commission or House Bill 17-07 and House Bill 17-38 which seeks to amend the Nuclear and Chemical Free Zone Act of the CNMI so that nuclear energy can be introduced on the i slands.

Rep. Stanley T. Torres, Ind.-Saipan, introduced all three bills.

Torres is strongly advocating for the legalization of marijuana, saying the illegal drug has medicinal benefits that could help aging people like him.

The first public hearing is scheduled for May 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the House chamber. Another hearing will be held on Tuesday, May 4, at 6:30 p.m. in the Garapan Elementary School cafeteria.

Separate public hearings will be held on Tinian and Rota. The time and dates will be announced at a later date.

Rep. Teresita A. Santos, Ind.-Rota, chairs the committee.
