A junior from Rota High School, Katelyn Alpino, has been uniquely selected for the program and is now preparing for a summer filled with math and science courses which will run from June 11 to July 21.
Alpino will be expecting the summer residential, pre-college program to offer, not only courses in math and science, but also in English, literature, composition, Japanese, Hawaiian, marine biology, and physics and college/career guidance, designed according to specific grade levels.
Upon conclusion of the program, Leeward expects Alpino and the rest of the participating students to find an increase in the level of individual academic skills and be better prepared for college life through the guidance of organizers, staff, and faculty of the Honolulu-based community college.
“I am thrilled to attend the summer program. This will, not only enhance my knowledge of math and science, but also allow me to experience different learning styles, and most especially, in an environment filled Hawaiian traditions,” she said.
Alpino is an active member of her high school National Honor Society and Youth Advisory Panel. For leisure, she spends time reading, playing volleyball, and listening to music. Her ultimate goal in life is to pursue a degree in the field of pediatrics.
“I always wanted to be a Pediatrician after working for the Rota Health Center,” said Alpino.
Katelyn is a participant of NMC’s Upward Bound Program, a federal TRIO program tasked with the responsibility to prepare and motivate qualified high school students for post secondary education.
