He said yesterday that the two concessions are “not new but were already processed when I came in.”
Long-time beach front concessionaires operating water sports and rides near the Hyatt Regency and the Fiesta Resort and Spa have complained about the “new” concessions.
DPL has suspended all new applications for beach front concessionaires since February.
Yosh Gabaldon of the Hyatt Regency Saipan told Variety that they have expressed their concern to DPL about the concessionaires adjacent to their area.
“The place is already crowded,” he said.
Babauta said he talked with the Hyatt management last Febuary.
He said the hotel complained that some staff of the concessionaires were entering hotel premises to entice hotel guests to take water rides.
“I made my round couple of weeks ago and verbally addressed this issue to everyone and letting them know not to do that,” Babauta said.
He said the areas at the Hyatt and Fiesta Resort have five current concessionaires and are already “crowded.”
The two “new” concessionaires are “definitely” the last to be given permits in those areas, he added.
A beach front concessionaire occupying a 20 by 20 square meter area is charged $250 a month or 3 percent of its gross income, whichever is the higher, Babauta said.
There are 19 permitted beach front concessionaires on Saipan. The permit is renewable every year.
