Program to benefit local farmers

A prime mover of the Farmers Support Group, he said the program is for the geographically disadvantaged farmers and ranchers.

It helps them by offsetting a portion of the costs of transporting agricultural inputs and products.

Farmer and ranchers in other U.S. jurisdictions will soon see relief from high transportation costs through the funding authorized by the Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008, Camacho said.

He said the law provides financial assistance of $8,000 to each commercial farmer.

Majority of the members of the Sabalu Farmers Market Association  are commercial farmers, Camacho said.

He said the local farmers will meet to discuss the benefits they can get from the federal program.

According to Camacho, some local farmers have already availed of federal programs for loan and crop insurance or for water catchment.

He said he has asked  Congressman Gregorio C. Sablan to help address the concerns of local farmers regarding crop insurance.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency raised the crop insurance fee from $300 to $750 or $900.

But CNMI and Guam farmers do not have big farms compared to their counterparts in the states who earn hundreds of thousand dollars a year, Camacho said.
