BANMI to award 14U kids, coach trip to Turkey

Basketball Association of the Northern Mariana Islands will select two young athletes and a coach to participate in the camp, which will be held August 24 to 31, 2010.

The deadline for submitting applications is on Friday, June 4.

BANMI President Elias Rangamar said, “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our young athletes and coaches. They will get the chance to meet new basketball friends from around the world, and learn about different cultures and peoples.  When they return to the CNMI, they will be able to share their experiences with their friends and teammates here, and help our sport grow.”

The Children of the World Basketball Camp is a social and cultural basketball project that will bring together teenagers from around the world.  Most of FIBA’s 212 national basketball federations are expected to participate, so the camp will offer an unforgettable experience for the participants.

The camp is not necessarily for top-level players.  It is enough that participants have fun playing basketball, have basic knowledge of the game, want to develop themselves, and have the personality that can make them good ambassadors for the CNMI.

Campers will be housed in dormitories, in a campus setting which has canteens, outdoor and indoor courts, swimming pools, and areas for social activities.  There will be 3-on-3 tournaments and basketball clinics led by coaches from the USA and other countries.  Campers will get to attend games of the 2010 World Championship, visit the exciting city of Istanbul, and participate in many other activities.

Boys and girls who want to be considered must be 14 years of age this year — that is, born in 1996.  They must be US citizens, and hold a US passport valid at least until the end of this year.  And they must be active in the sport of basketball.

Coaches who want to be considered must be 34 years of age or younger, and can be male or female.  They must also be US citizens, and hold a US passport valid at least until the end of this year.  They must also be active in the sport of basketball, and should preferably hold a coaching certification from BANMI.  The coach selected will be committed to working with youth basketball players in the future.

Interested boys, girls, and coaches should submit an application, containing the following information:  full name; gender (male or female); date of birth; telephone number; email address; a list of all languages you speak; a copy of the photo page of your US passport; proof of CNMI residency (school or employment records); a brief history of your participation and accomplishments in the sport of basketball; a short essay — not more than 250 words — telling BANMI why you think you should be selected to represent the CNMI at the Camp, and how you will make use of your experiences when you return to the CNMI.

All applications must be submitted by email to BANMI at this address:  [email protected].  The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, June 4, at 5 p.m.  Applications which are incomplete or submitted late will not be considered.  BANMI’s decisions with respect to the applications are final.
